To add integers, follow the following rules:

**a.** If the numbers have the same sign, just add and keep the same sign

**b.** If the numbers have different signs, just follow the steps below

**Step 1:** Find the absolute value of the numbers

**Step 2:** After you get the absolute value of the numbers, do the math below.

bigger number − smaller number

**Step 3**: Keep the sign of the integer that has the greater absolute value.

Example : Add -8 and 9

**Here the numbers have different signs, so we will follow step 1 through 3**

Step 1: Find the absolute value of the numbers

|-8| = 8

|9| = 9

Step 2: After you get the absolute value of the numbers, do the math below that is subtract the smaller number from the bigger.

bigger number − smaller number = 9 - 8 = 1

Step 3: Keep the sign of the integer that has the greater absolute value.

The integer that has the greater absolute value is 9 , so the answer is positive

-8 + 9 = 1
