How to add fractions

To learn how to add fractions with different denominator, study the example below:

1 / 2
  +
1 / 3

To add these two fractions, first find a common denominator

Since 2 and 3 can divide 6, 6 is a common denominator

How do we know?

6 / 2
= 3
  and
6 / 3
= 2

1 / 2
  ×
3 / 3
  +
1 / 3
  ×
2 / 2

Multiply the numerators together. Multiply the denominators together

1 × 3 / 2 × 3
  +
1 × 2 / 3 × 2

We get

3 / 6
  +
2 / 6

Now that the fractions have the same denominators, you can just add the numerators ( the numbers on top) and keep the same denominator

{ 3 + 2 equals 5

Here is the answer

1 / 2
  +
1 / 3
  =
5 / 6
